There are so many people with regular heartburn issues that do not even know or can’t put their finger on what is really causing it, I was also oblivious to the facts at hand myself. Now, how many of you have their antacid tablets (Tumms/ Rennie’s/ Gaviscon) at hand? I always had mine close by and haven’t been needing them for over 3 years now.

I am writing about my own experience and experiments I did over the years to basically cure my acid reflux for good. Here I’ll divulge just how you can cure your heartburn too, but you have to ask yourself… What are you willing to do to get rid of your heartburn? Remember this answer, you must keep yourself accountable and remember the advice given! It works

Why do people get heartburn?
I always knew, just like most, that many people get heartburn after or during a few glasses of red wine, consuming alcohol and some even get the fire after eating a banana which ph level is about 4.5 – 5.2, go figure! Banana’s is quite high in citric acid(Vitamin C) which is believed to bring on heartburn and yes many people do complain about heartburn issues after eating a banana or 2.

A persons normal or neutral ph level is 7, anything below 7 is considered to be acidic and above 7 is alkaline.

Many people have cured their body from life threatening diseases like cancer after going on an alkaline diet for which the Gerson therapy is known for, just look all over the internet just like this one. I’m going off-track now but I wanted to illustrate the effects of ingesting alkalizing forming foods and lemons are one of them. Lemons are acidic but it changes in the stomach and is considered to be an alkalizing forming food.

To get back to acid reflux, here is the physical symptoms you might experience and some which I certainly had on a high meat / protein diet.

  • Joint pains.
  • Gout.
  • Occasional bladder burn/ infection.
  • Overweight.
  • Bad Digestion that leads to…
  • Fatigue.

This is how I cured my acid reflux, I haven’t had the issue for over 3 years now and only once it came back after I drank quite a bit of beer and ate a pizza or two over several days.

My advice and do let me know if it worked for you! I’m pretty sure you see where I am going with this:
STOP eating acid forming foods as far as possible. 

Acid forming foods that is extremely acidic and should be avoided as much as possible:

  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Beef, Lamb, Pork & Poultry(Chicken, Duck, Turkey)
  • Beer & Liquor
  • Breads & Wheat & White flours
  • Sugar
  • Carbonated soft drinks
  • Cereals
  • Chocolate (normal types, not dark chocolate)
  • Cigarettes and tobacco
  • Coffee
  • Custards (with white sugar)
  • Fruit juices with sugar

  • Jams with high sugar content, which most have to preserve longer.
  • Jellies
  • Maple syrup (processed)
  • Molasses (sulphured)
  • Packaged, store bought goods like sauces, certain spices.
  • Pasta (white)
  • Pastries and cakes from white flour
  • Pickles (commercial)
  • Sugar
  • Table salt (refined and iodized)
  • Tea (black)
  • White vinegar (processed)
  • Whole wheat foods
  • Wine
  • Yogurt (sweetened)

The other moderately acid forming foods like nuts especially peanuts, butter, milk, soy sauce and certain seeds should also be avoided but the above list is by far the worst.

The most beneficial foods for your body s food that is alive!

Opt for foods that is still alive, if you were to stick a part of the food into the ground it should grow and make another, if not it is not alive and cannot properly nourish your body by providing the vital life force benefits!

I certainly advocate a balanced plant based diet, that I am also still easing into. The two things I am still struggling to let go is eggs and cheese, especially on a pizza! But, I’ll eat about 5 eggs a week and a pizza every other week.

Here is a quick list of the best alkalizing foods to enjoy:
Obviously there is so much more than these mentioned…

  • Any leafy greens like Kale, Spinach, Salads, Cilantro/Coriander
  • Almonds
  • Celery & Chives
  • Flax seeds & Oil (be wary of the oil, it goes rancid very quickly, rather use seeds)
  • Green Beans
  • Sweet Potato
  • Mint
  • Coconut
  • Sprouting seeds (Soy, Alfalfa, Amaranth, Brocolli, Fenugreek, Kamut, Mung Bean, Quinoa, Radish, Spelt etc.) Always use NON-GMO seeds.
  • Grains & Beans
  • Most fruits

Many of the above mentioned greens like Mint and Kale can be added to your daily smoothie or health drink.

I hope this information will encourage you to cut out more acidic foods, nothing happens over night but it is certainly worth it, I have lost weight without even exercising and now that I do play some Ultimate Frisbee twice a week I have lost that last layer of fat around my middle and upper body. I have so much more energy now too, I think clearer and can attest that eating much less animal products do change one’s body and mind dramatically.
